St Ethelreda's Church London (Ely Place)

St Etheldreda

Thank you for visiting the website of St Etheldreda’s Church in Ely Place, London.

The site was launched on Wednesday 10th November 2004 and is designed to be useful both to regular or occasional visitors to the church itself and to those far away, especially in distant parts of the world, who may never actually be able to visit the church in person – we hope this website helps to convey to you the charm of the church and its enduring appeal.

If this is your first visit, please be patient whilst the music uploads, especially if you don’t have a broadband connection. It’s well worth the wait, however, as you will then hear five beautiful pieces of music as recorded by the Church’s Choir in 1998.

In order, these pieces are –

Missa de Angelis: Agnus Dei
Missa de Angelis: Sanctus
Salve Regina
Ave Maria
Ave verum corpus

All five recordings are taken from the Aid to the Church In Need Catholic Collection CD which is available from the Church itself or via this website’s Shop page.

If you are thinking of coming to St Etheldreda’s, the Masses page has detailed information about the times of regular services, the slightly different arrangements for Holy Days of Obligation and confession times too, as well as forthcoming choral and organ music – this may help you to time your visit to coincide with a performance of a work by one of your favourite composers.

The History page tells the fascinating story of St Etheldreda’s, starting from the birth of the beloved Saint herself in 630 and continuing right through to the present day. The text is based very much on Silent Witness, the video which tells the story of the Church in a captivating way, and which is also available during a visit to the Church or from the Shop page on this website.

For those of you unlikely ever to visit the Church in person, the Gallery page has over 140 photographs, all enlargeable, which reflect the beauty in particular of the numerous stained glass windows. The North and South windows alone include 32 biblical scenes, whose details you can observe with great clarity on the enlarged versions; and the coats of arms of the Bishops of Ely are enchantingly colourful.

Please look at the page about the Café, so that, if you’re a weekday visitor, you can plan your visit to take advantage of the delicious hot and cold meals available in its relaxing atmosphere.

Since St Etheldreda's is a Rosminian church, you may find it interesting to visit the Rosminian international website which is www.rosmini.org

Once again, thank you for visiting the site. We hope you enjoy it immensely.
